Born in England, Joe has lived in Africa from the age of 10. He returned to England to study biological sciences at Bristol University and in 1998 commenced work as a professional safari guide.

Having worked as a resident guide at some of the most prestigious safari destinations on the African continent, including Jack's Camp in Botswana and Cottar's 1920s Camp in Kenya, Joe went on to lead safaris throughout eastern and southern Africa before finally setting up his own private safari company. In 2005, Joe was invited to become a partner in Ker and Downey Safaris.

Joe maintains a profound interest in wildlife and its conservation. As a qualified Botswana Field Guide and Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association (KPSGA) 'silver level' guide, his knowledge is wide ranging, while his most keen area of interest lies in animal behavior. Joe is a firm believer in community conservation and provides practical support for numerous education and orphanage projects via the Kenya Wildlife Trust and numerous independent organizations in Nairobi and the Maasai Mara. Joe resides in Nairobi with his wife Gillian and their son, Kian.
